Play Patterns
Favors Into Shadows
A good plan with shadows is to play it’s innates in pairs. One turn set up dahan with Favors, the next protect them with Concealing Shadows. On each turn, play one or the other of your other uniques. Fill in any additional card plays with your drafts.
Drafting
Shadows desperately searches for cards. You have quite a good amount of
and
in your starting hand but the specific combination of
, and sometimes just
on it’s own, will often be your limiting factor.
Your other primary concern when drafting is the cost of each card. Your 0 starting energy hurts and continues to hurt for many turns. You can work around it with G3 but combined with the dahan-targeting energy cost on your special rule, you are likely to need every bit you can get.
Boards
The big negative for Shadows in a board is if land 5 is also the highest-numbered jungle. When that is the case, all 3 of your starting presence is placed in the single land, which limits your innate power’s targeting.
The next consideration is how many lands on your board are not within range 1, for innate targeting purposes. This is a fairly minor factor, but does limit your options until you grow further outward.
The final tie-breaker is whether your Dahan are in good positions for the quadruple-stack, and whether the board has lots of adjacencies so you can send them somewhere relevant each time.
Priority | Board | Reason |
---|---|---|
1 | E | All lands range 1 |
2 | C | L8 range 2 |
3 | G | L3 range 2, worse dahan |
4 | D | L3/L8 range 2 |
5 | B | L2/L3 range 2 |
6 | A | "" |
7 | H | Triple stack starting land |
8 | F | "", range 2 lands same terrain |
